On 22.05.2019, the POM department was duly represented at the Berlin company run by Prof. Thomas Volling and three of his employees, Lotte Grünwald, Nico Kummert and Lukas Pfaud.

The almost 6 km long route through Berlin started and ended near the Brandenburg Gate. In any case, it was a wonderful communal experience. 

Doctoral Workshop Northeast DoWoNo 2019

From 8 to 10 May 2019 the 21st DoWoNo took place in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. This year's event was organized by the Institute for Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Prof. Dr. Guido Voigt) of the University of Hamburg.
The Department of Industrial Production and Service Management took part in the inter-university doctoral workshop. For the first time since the departure of Prof. Günther, the TU Berlin is once again part of the network and will also host the conference in 2021.

POM on tour at PMI

On Wednesday, 13.02.2019, Prof. Volling's students had the opportunity to visit another production facility in Berlin. They visited the cigarette production at Philip Morris International, which employs over 2000 people. The entire production process, from the delivery of tobacco to the packaging of the finished cigarettes in boxes and cartons, could be accompanied by the students in an illustrative tour. Around the clock, 150 - 200 million cigarettes are made ready for dispatch here every day. That is over 2000 cigarettes per second. 

From the engine block to the test drive

Together with the department head Prof. Thomas Volling, approx. 40 students of the department visited the BMW motorcycle production in Berlin on 07.02.2019. The students from bachelor and master events had the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the surprisingly lean production lines and were able to follow the entire production of the machines from the engine block to the test drive within a few hours. 
The students were then able to ask two BMW production managers open questions about electromobility and optimizations in the production process.

Prof. Volling was honored by the European Journal of Operational Research as an "Outstanding Reviewer" for the review of professional articles.


Latest result of the evaluation: Grade 1.0

The results of the course evaluation are available. The feedback on the in-depth modules "Planung und Steuerung industrieller Produktionsprozesse" and „Production and Operations Management in the Automotive Industry“ was particularly gratifying. In the overall evaluation, both were awarded a grade of 1.0. Particular emphasis was placed on practical relevance and method diversity.

The team of the department says "Thank you" and is working on a continuation in the current winter semester. 

New article published in the Journal of Business Economics

In the current edition of the Journal of Business Economics was the article "Multi-item single-source ordering with detailed consideration of transportation capacities" published. It is an cooperation with Martin Grunewald, Christoph Müller
and Thomas Spengler from the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany.

From PM to POM

Starting in summer semester 2018 Prof. Dr. Thomas Volling will take over the management of the department.

The new appointment also entails a reorientation in terms of content. The focus of research is on issues arising in the manufacture and marketing of products with many variants, especially at the interfaces of production, logistics, sales and service.

In addition to a completely redesigned course offering consisting of German and English modules on topics of industrial production and logistics management, you can expect numerous opportunities to get involved - for example in the context of project and thesis work as well as participation in research projects!
