Thomas Volling is Professor and Head of the Production and Operations Management research group. After studying industrial engineering at Braunschweig Technical University and the University of Rhode Island, he received his doctorate in 2008 from the Institute of Automotive Economics and Industrial Production (AIP) at Braunschweig Technical University on the subject of "Order-related planning for variant-rich series production". From 2008 to 2014 he leaded the working group "Automobile Production and Logistics" at the AIP and habilitated in 2014 on "Demand and Capacity Management in the Automotive Supply Chain". From 2014 to 2018 he held the position of a professor of production and logistics management at the FernUniversität in Hagen before joining TU Berlin.

In research projects Thomas Volling cooperates with companies and institutes, including Bosch, MAN, PSI, Salzgitter, ThyssenKrupp und Volkswagen. The results of his research have been published in internationally recognized journals and awarded the Heinrich Büssing Prize and the Best Practice Paper Award of the Association of University Teachers for Business Administration. He is a reviewer for leading professional journals (including Computers & Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Economics, Journal of Cleaner Production, Production and Operations Management, OR Spectrum) and is involved in the organization of national and international conferences. Since 2021 he has been Chairman of the Scientific Commission Production Economics of the Association of University Teachers for Business Administration (Verband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft e. V.) (VHB).

In research and teaching, Thomas Volling deals with business management problems of production and operations management as well as their modelling and solving with the help of quantitative models and methods of operations research. His research focus is on issues arising in the manufacture and marketing of products with many variants, especially at the interfaces of production, logistics, sales and service.
